This design begins with my photograph of a very fine specimen of Quartz Mud Included from Cleveland, North Carolina. By reflecting and repeating its crystal forms, I gave the image a new symmetry. Across the design, the mineral’s crystal forms and intricate details form a pattern that still reveals the remarkable rock where it began.

About the Inverted Color design

I invert the colors of my original photograph: dark becomes light, and details that were easy to miss come forward. I haven’t added false color or chosen a new palette. The inverted colors come directly from the original image.

That is why the Original and Inverted Color designs work so well together. Their colors are opposites on the color wheel—complementary partners drawn from the very same specimen. Each is a different view of the rock, and each makes the other more vivid.
