It belongs to the aragonite group of carbonates, along with aragonite, strontianite, and witherite. It can accommodate small amounts of Ca, Ba, and Sr as impurities, which can affect its color. It is a secondary mineral, meaning it forms from the alteration of other minerals, especially galena, which is the primary ore of lead. Cerussite is a source of lead, which has many industrial uses, but also poses a health risk due to its toxicity¹²
