Long Scarf: Dolomite w Muscovite, North American Emerald Mine, Alexander Cty, North Carolina

The dolomite and muscovite specimen photographed for this design was found only 12 inches from the extraordinary 1,869-carat emerald recovered from the North American Emerald Mine near Hiddenite, North Carolina. I purchased the specimen directly from Terry Ledford, one of the men who extracted that celebrated emerald from the pocket.

The emerald, the largest uncut natural emerald ever discovered in North America, is now one of the treasures of the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

From Rock to Wearable Art

This scarf was created from an original photograph by mineral collector and photographer Tommy Armstrong. The crystalline forms of dolomite and muscovite have been transformed into a flowing design that allows the mineral’s natural architecture to reveal itself in an entirely different way.

About the Scarf

This 16 × 72-inch scarf is available in five fabrics, each giving the mineral image a different character:
